Nettle Plant

In the salon I sometimes see clients with hair health problems. Often what the hair needs after years of abuse is a fresh start with a new cut and appropriate diet. Sometimes hair issues can be caused by stress and other emotional factors but in all cases appropriate herbal remedies can help. Let’s talk about one which has been scientifically proven to work. Stinging Nettle.

After playing outside as a child we sometimes felt the strong, biting itch of the nettle plant.  Even though we could easily identify them with their perfectly shaped leaves and light green stalk, often we still felt the horrible aftereffects from a simple touch on our arms or legs.  Little did we know at the time that this annoying plant had remarkable properties that not only help in fighting hair loss but also stimulate hair to regrow.

All aspects of the plant; the leaves, root, and stalk contain amazing hair and scalp nutrients including:

Vitamins A, B, C, D, and E

Minerals such as Silicon, Sulphur, Folate, Riboflavin, Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, Iron, and Manganese.

While these all provide major benefits for hair and scalp health, studies have shown surprising efficacy of silicon.  Nettle has also been proven to suppress the formation of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone which frequently cause baldness in both men and women.

Nettle is used in many forms including hair and scalp rinses, in salads (dried or green), and as tea (seep and simmer for 5 minutes in hot water).  However, as with any herbal remedy, please consult your doctor if you are taking any medication.

So go searching nearby gardens, fields, or check out your local health store for this miracle herb. Here are a few links to check out the benefits of the nettle plant:
